Lael Neale signs to a new label and details her next album

Singer-songwriter Lael Neale announced a new album, "As Killers Do," sharing a self-directed video for its first single, "Slip Away." After three albums on Sub Pop, the record is self-released November 20 via her own new imprint, Consensual Sound.

Neale made the album with her regular collaborator Guy Blakeslee, recording it in the kitchen of a bungalow in Echo Park, Los Angeles, on a Tascam cassette 8-track machine. Blakeslee also filmed the "Slip Away" video, a stop-motion piece built around Neale's own artwork, the kind she otherwise sells at her merch table at shows.

In a press release, Neale said she once cared about follower counts and streaming numbers, but has grown "much less interested in it" after recent revelations about how those numbers get faked. She added that making music and paintings is simply what she does, saying she goes "crazy inside my own mind" when she isn't making things.

Of "Slip Away" specifically, Neale said its lyrics push back against self-importance: "We act as little gods... We are not gods." "As Killers Do" follows Neale's "Altogether Stranger," "Star Eaters Delight" and "Acquainted With Night," each named to Under the Radar's own year-end best-albums lists in 2025, 2023 and 2021.

Neale will tour Europe through late August and early September, including stops at Green Man Festival and Pop-Kultur Festival, before three U.S. dates in New York, Garwood and Baltimore in September. "As Killers Do" lands in the release calendar among the rest of the fall's new indie releases from Lael Neale, with her tour also logged in the tour guide.
