Lane Hartley sets his second LP No Home for 23 October

Lane Hartley has announced his second LP, No Home, due 23 October via Royal Oakie Records, The Line of Best Fit reported on August 14. The Asheville alt-folk artist recorded it live at Drop of Sun studio with a six-piece band that includes Mary Lattimore, Seth Kaufman and David Hartley of The War On Drugs.

The single I Am Not Ashamed is out now, co-produced by David Hartley and Adam McDaniel, and Hartley has said it draws from the memoir of the actor Barbara Payton. He has framed No Home as a set of vignettes about alienation, pairing darker subject matter with brighter arrangements influenced by Gene Clark's No Other, Neil Young's After the Gold Rush and Amen Dunes' Love.

Hartley credited his backing band for shaping the record's tone: "All of the players on this record really brought it to life in such a cosmic way." He said they "instilled so much childlike wonder and fun into the making of the album." The six-piece also includes multi-instrumentalist Jack Victor Johnson alongside Lattimore, Kaufman and Hartley.

Hartley said leaning into brighter arrangements was a deliberate response to the album's darker lyrics: "I wanted each song to feel like a room in a haunted house, with a beautiful garden growing outside."

Hartley has described the record as essentially a breakup album, with songs about mourning the end of a relationship and reflecting on what went wrong, written while he was falling in love, getting his heart broken, and driving across the country doing it all over again.
