LeAnn Phelan is running an online songwriting workshop this month called The Whole Songwriter, and its premise is that a career is not the same thing as a publishing deal. The LP Creative Therapy series runs from 8 to 11 September and is built around three ideas Phelan calls career, craft and creative hydration.
The guest list is drawn from the Nashville publishing world. Nicolle Galyon, a songwriter and producer who founded the label and publishing venture Songs & Daughters, joins alongside Tim DuBois, an executive and songwriter, and Chris Oglesby, head of creative at BMG Nashville. All three take part in a live question and answer session with Phelan.
The programme covers songwriting, publishing, creative development, leadership and longevity, and it treats looking after yourself as part of the professional brief rather than an aside. That is an unusual emphasis for an industry series, which more commonly stops at pitching and placement.
Phelan framed the reasoning in terms of what she has watched over 25 years of working with songwriters. Growth, she said, means more than getting a publishing deal or writing a hit. It is about continuing to develop craft, understanding the business well enough to make good decisions, and staying connected to whatever made someone want to create in the first place.
One session addresses a problem none of the older material covers. Erin McAnally, president of SONA, and Ellen Truley, chief marketing officer at The MLC, join for a conversation about artificial intelligence and the protections currently available to songwriters, an area where the answers are changing faster than most creative advice.
Scholarships toward Phelan's upcoming two-month LP Creative Therapy workshop will be awarded during the series, which gives the four days a practical outcome beyond the sessions themselves. Registration is open, and the country songwriting community in Nashville is the primary audience, though the material is not restricted to it.
