Fred Tackett and Scott Sharrard, both guitarists in Little Feat, have detailed Honest Men, a duo album built on the musical chemistry they have developed as bandmates.
"Really, we just want to jam," Sharrard said of the decision to record and tour together as a duo. That simple philosophy runs through the album, recorded live in the studio without headphones and with almost no overdubs, letting the pair's natural interplay shape the performances. Tackett, who spent years touring as a duo with the late Paul Barrere, said his connection with Sharrard involves "total trust in each other" and music "that we don't have to think about."
The 10-song collection combines Little Feat catalog pieces with original songwriting: Tackett contributes "Dance To The Radio," "Fool Yourself" and "Church Falling Down," while Sharrard wrote "Anne Marie," "Love Like Kerosene" and "Midnight Flight." The album also includes "My Only True Friend," which Sharrard co-wrote with Gregg Allman for the latter's Grammy-nominated Southern Blood, reflecting Sharrard's earlier work as Allman's musical director before he joined Little Feat in 2019 following Barrere's death.
Honest Men leans directly on the band's history through "Roll Um Easy," the Lowell George-penned Little Feat classic from 1973's Dixie Chicken. Tackett, who would not officially join Little Feat until 1988, contributed guitar, mandolin and trumpet to Dixie Chicken as a session player, giving him a personal connection to the song more than five decades before revisiting it with Sharrard.
The duo debuted the project live at Utah's Egyptian Theatre in July and will tour behind the album this winter, beginning with an East Coast run in December before heading west in January and February; Little Feat itself resumes its own rock tour on September 10 at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. The album joins a wave of fall rock releases from veteran songwriters, following announcements from Susanna Hoffs and Neil Young, all tracked in the release calendar.
