Lonnie Gunn released her debut EP, 2013 horsemeat scandal, on August 7, alongside its single "Pink Butterfly Wing." The song turns on a partner who professed love again after Gunn had already moved on, an experience she has described as feeling like an accusation dressed up as affection.
Gunn said the EP "centers around a hyper-awareness that someday everything I've ever known or loved is going to end," along with the complicated emotions that come with that realization. Written over the course of a year, the seven track EP explores impermanence, anxiety, nostalgia and grief, opening with a voice recording of her best friend from high school and closing with a voice note of a song her ex partner used to sing to her.
Gunn described the voice-note bookends as framing the record like "one big letter" of insistence to an ex, admitting to feeling "completely insane" but explaining that the stakes felt too high to simply let go.
Gunn has said the EP's title applies as much to feeling like an imposter in her own relationships as to the real news story it references, describing it as the fear of giving someone "a poorly constructed replica of the person they want you to be." "Pink Butterfly Wing" followed earlier singles "Good Girls Go To Heaven," "Photocopy" and "Babytooth," the last written with producer Oscar Lang and inspired by Mitski and Caroline Polachek.
Gunn marked release week with a free show at London's Shacklewell Arms before a sold out EP release party at The Rossi Bar in Brighton. She has also recently supported TTSSFU and opened for Kim Gordon at London's O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, building a live profile that now matches the attention her recorded songs have drawn.
