Norteño band Los Tigres del Norte joins conductor Gustavo Dudamel at the Hollywood Bowl

Los Tigres del Norte will share the Hollywood Bowl stage with outgoing Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Gustavo Dudamel on August 21, the norteño group announced, in a one-night pairing billed as "Gustavo's Fiesta" between two very different corners of Latin music. The show is part of a farewell series called "Celebrating Gustavo at the Bowl," sending Dudamel off before he becomes music and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic.

The bill goes well beyond the two headliners. Grammy-winning singer Lila Downs, the all-female Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, cumbia group La Sonora Dinamita and the veteran bolero trio Los Panchos are also on the August 21 lineup, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Los Tigres del Norte's own resume needs little padding. Formed five decades ago, the group has sold more than 40 million albums, recorded roughly 700 songs and won seven Grammys and eight Latin Grammys, along with a record 67 entries on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart, more than any other Latin act in the chart's history. The band made history of a different kind in 2018 as the first norteño act to headline the Hollywood Bowl, and last December it reached a far younger audience: an animated version of the group appeared on "The Simpsons," performing an original corrido about Homer Simpson and Bumblebee Man.

The August 21 concert is the third-to-last stop on Dudamel's farewell run as the L.A. Philharmonic's music and artistic director. He follows it a day later with a show alongside Foo Fighters, then closes his tenure on August 23 with a benefit concert for his home country of Venezuela, which was hit by twin earthquakes in late June. Donations from that closing show will go to Dudamel's Earthquake Recovery to Support Venezuelan Communities fund, run in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The pairing extends a pattern for both artists: Dudamel has used his final Bowl season to spotlight causes and collaborators well outside the classical repertoire, as seen in Gustavo Dudamel dedicates his final Hollywood Bowl concert to Venezuela relief, while Los Tigres del Norte have spent five decades using their biggest stages, from the Bowl to prime-time animation, to put norteño music in front of audiences who might never otherwise hear it.
