Six musicians from the Manchester Camerata will perform Brian Eno's 1979 album Ambient 1: Music for Airports inside Manchester Airport's Terminal 2 on September 20, playing Will Newell's arrangement across two sessions, from 2pm to 3pm and again from 3:45pm to 4:45pm, Mixmag reported.
It's only the second time the album has been staged at an airport, following a 2006 performance by New York ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
The performance is part of Here We Are festival, which sees the Camerata play free, accessible shows across all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester between September 15 and 20. Terminal 2, where the concert takes place, underwent a £1.5 billion expansion completed in 2021 that doubled its size.
"To be able to partner with such a forward-thinking organisation as Manchester Airport for this concert has been a total dream," said Bob Riley, chief executive of Manchester Camerata.
"Human connection through innovative, fearless and excellent performance is at the heart of Manchester Camerata," Riley added, saying he can't wait to share the experience with travellers at Terminal 2. He described the goal as letting travellers "hear this genre-defining masterwork as it was intended" while waiting at the gate.
