Maple's Pet Dinosaur signs a global deal with Warner Music Australia

Maple's Pet Dinosaur has signed a global deal with Warner Music Australia and In Bloom, and released "Child's Play", the title track of her debut EP, as the first thing she has put out under it.

The Australian artist is 15. She called the deal a dream come true ahead of the EP, saying she was grateful for that level of belief from one of the best labels in the world.

The song is heavier than the material that made her name. It leans on a discordant, denser arrangement, with drums from Dan Stivens of Ocean Sleeper, and she described the idea as fusing Ariana Grande or Christina Aguilera style vocal runs over something really dirty and heavy. Exploring ideas inside heavy alt-metal is where she says she wants to be.

Her breakthrough came from something much smaller. Her debut single "lego" arrived last August with a video filmed on a Ring doorbell camera, which spread quickly, and the shows followed rather than the other way around.

She has been careful about what she did with that attention. She said she was offered plenty of chances to keep working the doorbell video, including flights to the US for talk shows, but that the clip was only ever meant to be a gateway for gigs. She is not trying to be a celebrity or an influencer, she said, adding that she wants to be a rock singer.

The live record so far backs that up. She played her third-ever show at SXSW Sydney and has since become the youngest artist to appear at Australia's Good Things festival, sharing stages with Tool and Weezer. The signing puts a rock and indie act at the front of Warner's Australian development roster at an unusually early stage.
