Mastodon release ninth album Marrow Deep

Mastodon have released their ninth album, Marrow Deep, announced barely a month before it arrived. Bassist and singer Troy Sanders said the record is "reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we're united, and excited to get to work."

The album is the band's leanest and heaviest since 2006's Blood Mountain, and it carries real loss in its foundation. Founding guitarist Brent Hinds parted ways with the band in March 2025 amid reportedly tense circumstances and was killed in a motorcycle accident five months later; drummer Brann Dailor lost his own mother that same February. The album's title borrows a phrase the band once used to describe its bond with late manager Nick John, now standing in for both losses at once.

Old friends helped carry the record. Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme sings on "Snakes For Dinner," Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler lays down a bass solo on "The Vanishing," and Clutch's Neil Fallon delivers a sermon-like guest turn on closer "The Three Fates." New guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira, who joined after Hinds' departure, get their clearest showcase yet on "In The Ruins."

Marrow Deep was co-produced by the band alongside pop producer Patrik Berger, known for Robyn's "Dancing On My Own," and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou, whose hardcore pedigree shapes the record's raw, direct mix. Clash's review called it "the mightiest Mastodon have sounded in close to twenty years" and gave the album an 8 out of 10, adding that the band "have never dropped a dud yet."

The release adds another entry to Mastodon's long run on the release calendar, continuing a catalog defined as much by grief as by the band's progressive metal reach.
