Mietze Conte has released a single called painting on a monument and given the album behind it a date. (L)ove (I)s (F)or (E)veryone arrives on 29 October through the label common knowledge, and The Line of Best Fit describes the Vienna-based artist's record as antifascist in intent.
The single is a club track, and the politics are not buried in it. Conte says it came out of a "frustration with how the world is structured", pointing at statues built for fascists and monuments raised, literally and figuratively, for the most hateful people available.
His first instinct, he says, is to blow it all up and tear it down. His second is that doing so changes nothing, because somebody puts up another one and blames you for the gap. That is the argument the title answers.
What he lands on instead is the image the song is named for. Rather than pulling a wall down, you can paint on it, and the paint might crack the surface and reach something softer underneath. He describes the whole project as playfully and kindly changing the world step by step, which is a rare thing to hear from a record billed as antifascist.
He has been busy enough to make the album feel like a summary rather than a return. Conte played Maiden Voyage, Sweden's Way Out West and Berlin's MAGMA over the summer, and the record follows a recent mixtape, wufwufwuf, on top of a long run of EPs and singles before that.
The touring around it goes a long way for an electropop artist at this level. Japanese headline dates are in the diary first, then a UK and Irish run: Manchester's Gorilla on 30 October, Dublin's Wigwam on 26 November, Glasgow's SWG3 on 27 November, and EarTH, the Evolutionary Arts Hackney venue in London, on 21 November.
The routing is worth a second look, because the London date sits between Dublin and Glasgow rather than at the end of the run. That is either a scheduling quirk or a sign the dates were booked separately and stitched together, and nothing in the announcement says which.
