Modest Mouse brings out Califone frontman Tim Rutili in Chicago

Modest Mouse brought out Califone frontman Tim Rutili during their headlining set at Chicago's The Salt Shed on August 12, the two performing songs from the rock side project Ugly Casanova, which Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock formed in 1997, JamBase reported. Califone opened the show as part of a run of dates supporting Modest Mouse.

Rutili, a member of Ugly Casanova, joined Brock midway through the headlining set for "Barnacles," the opening track from the project's lone album, 2002's Sharpen Your Teeth. Modest Mouse had only just broken the song out again at a pre-show concert in Miami earlier this year, the band's first performance of "Barnacles" since 1997. Rutili then stayed onstage for "Spilled Milk Factory," another Sharpen Your Teeth cut that Modest Mouse had last played in 2005.

Ugly Casanova reunited earlier this year for the first time in 15 years to perform at Modest Mouse's Ice Cream Floats cruise festival, and the Chicago appearance extends that reunion energy onto dry land as the tour continues. The full Modest Mouse set spanned more than 20 songs across the band's catalog, from "Gravity Rides Everything" to "Trucker's Atlas."

Califone continues to open for Modest Mouse through the rest of the week, with shows scheduled in St. Paul, Milwaukee and Philadelphia, leaving open the possibility that Rutili could resurface for more Ugly Casanova cuts before the run wraps.
