Moscow's Outline Festival cancelled over drone strike threat

The 2026 edition of Moscow-based Outline Festival has been cancelled over fears of drone strikes in the area, Ukrainian news outlet United24 reported. Organisers announced the cancellation on July 21, the same day the festival's gates were due to open, citing "the threat of drone danger in the region of the event."

Outline was scheduled to run for seven days in the Taldomsky district of Moscow Oblast, closing July 28, with a lineup that included electronic veterans A Guy Called Gerald, DJ Pierre and Derrick May. In a statement shared to Instagram, organisers said the team had done "everything they could" to keep the event going before authorities stepped in, adding that "everything we've created remains" and the festival "will be back," without further detail.

The festival has drawn criticism in recent years over its location and its perceived ties to the war in Ukraine. A military recruitment tent was reportedly seen at its entrance in 2023, alongside vehicles marked with the pro-war Z symbol. Ahead of this year's cancelled edition, Ukrainian activist Maya Baklanova circulated a list of the international artists booked to perform.

Baklanova has previously criticised Western DJs who chose to play Outline, telling The Guardian after its 2024 edition that performers were "normalising the war and the Russian regime." She argued that by playing the event, artists were effectively helping fund the Russian war effort, adding that she saw "a total lack of awareness, ignorance and greed among some in the electronic scene."

This is not the first time Outline has run into trouble. In 2016, the festival was shut down after local authorities said it failed to meet safety standards, with riot police entering the grounds on opening night. Organisers have not said whether a rescheduled or 2027 edition will appear on the festival tracker.
