Ms. Rachel matches the rapper Macklemore's $1 million Palestine donation

Ms. Rachel has said she will match the million dollars Macklemore donated to organisations working with Palestinians, and used the announcement to put the same question to everybody else in her income bracket. "I will match Macklemore's donation and I invite every wealthy white celebrity to match it and speak out against the genocide in Gaza," she wrote on Instagram on 17 September.

The rest of her post stayed on the ground the children's educator knows best. She wrote that more than 20,000 Palestinian children have been killed and that children are still being killed daily, and said anyone with privilege and a platform has a moral obligation to use both to protect children and human rights.

The donation she is matching came out of a tour Macklemore is no longer on. He was removed from the remaining dates of Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour after making pro-Palestine remarks on stage, under pressure from stadium owners including Robert Kraft, who owns Gillette Stadium. Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga all pulled out of the remaining dates in support of him.

Macklemore then said he would give his entire million-dollar earnings from the tour to six organisations working directly with Palestinians, and challenged Kraft by name to match it. Kraft did, in a statement posted through Gillette Stadium, saying that Sheeran had called him earlier that same day and asked him to commit $2 million to match Sheeran's own donation toward humanitarian relief in the region.

Kraft framed the commitment in terms of building bridges between people and said Sheeran now plans to approach other venue owners with the same request. He did not name any of the organisations his money is going to, and XXL does not name Macklemore's six either, so how much of this has actually moved and to whom is not on the public record.

Macklemore's back catalogue has kept working through all of it, and Can't Hold Us still leads Spotify's hip-hop streaming counts. The fallout has reached well past one tour: Singapore barred two members of Massive Attack over a pro-Palestine concert display earlier this year, and the hip-hop end of the argument now has a dollar figure attached to it.
