Nails have put out two new songs, "Dollar Bin Generation" and "Fear Based Life", the first new material in some time from one of the most punishing bands hardcore has produced.
Todd Jones started the group in Oxnard, California in 2007, after long tenures in Carry On and in Terror, and Nails became one of the most extreme acts on the hardcore landscape almost immediately.
The sound has never been purely one thing. Nails pull ugly, guttural influence from death metal and grindcore, but the songs stay rooted in hardcore rather than crossing over into either, and both new tracks make that lineage obvious.
"Dollar Bin Generation" is the harder of the pair, built on finding further depths of heaviness to dig into, with Jones writing at his angriest. "Fear Based Life" pulls the tempo back a fraction, which lets the riffs land more precisely rather than softening anything.
The two songs went out unannounced as a surprise EP called Fear Based Life, and the band used the release to confirm they have signed to Closed Casket Activities, a label they have worked alongside informally for years.
It is a short return rather than a full one. The tracks put Nails back into circulation at the heaviest end of metal and hardcore, and anything that follows will appear on the release calendar.
