A new nightclub with a 5am licence is set to open inside a former Odeon cinema on Bristol's Union Street, after the city council's licensing sub-committee unanimously approved the venue this week.
The space sits in Broadmead, a shopping district in Bristol's city centre, and comes from UG Arts, the group behind the SAWMILLS club in St Jude's and the long-running Alfresco Disco party series.
The former cinema will house a club and live music space focused on electronic music, while also functioning as an arts venue for film screenings and theatre shows. It has been granted a 5am licence for Friday and Saturday nights, with hours extending to 4am on other nights of the week, along with permission to sell alcohol and hot food and to host live music events. The only objection to the application came from nearby venue Electric Bristol, which is now being consulted on the plans.
Project head Luke Turner said the goal is to link the venue into the wider city rather than operate in isolation. "We want to connect with different establishments in Bristol and beyond, and work with universities and different agencies," he said, describing the aim as a broad celebration of music and the arts across the city.
Turner and his partner, Jack Scales, have committed to investing 500,000 pounds into the venue ahead of its launch, though a name for the club and an opening date have not yet been confirmed.
