Nine Inch Nails mark 30 years of the Quake soundtrack with a merch collection

Nine Inch Nails and id Software are marking the 30th anniversary of the video game Quake with a limited merchandise collection and a new round of content for the game, Indie Hoy reported on August 7.

The Nine Inch Nails collaboration includes t-shirts, jackets, a keychain and an ammunition box modeled on the one that appears in the game, priced between $40 and $110 on the band's website. Separately, id Software released a new episode for players and a 19-map campaign to mark the anniversary.

Trent Reznor, who composed Quake's original score, appeared in a video for the QuakeCon convention recalling how discovering the game Wolfenstein first showed him nothing else like it existed, and how Doom later felt like a technological leap with no equivalent at the time. "It felt like there were no adults involved, nobody was saying no," he said of that era of PC gaming, and working on Quake let him experiment the way he does with rock music, distorting sound to express himself.

Reznor said he and the id Software team hit it off right away after crossing paths, and that being invited to compose the game's music and sound effects is something he's "extremely proud of" within his whole career. He called Quake's staying power three decades later "a memorable moment."

The original Nine Inch Nails score, industrial and atmospheric, was released alongside the game in 1996 and became a favorite among fans, Indie Hoy reported.
