Kwamie Liv has released No One Owns the Sunrise, the first music she has put out in six years, according to The Line of Best Fit. It comes out independently through her own imprint, Fame Bear, with distribution handled by Awal, which means the return is on her own terms in the literal contractual sense as well as the figurative one.
The song is a deliberate turn away from what she is known for. The Danish-Zambian artist built her name on dark pop, and this is not that. She describes the track as being "about the sunrise that lives inside all of us", a free and independent force she says cannot be controlled and needs protecting, and which shows itself when people lift each other up.
The gap behind it was filled rather than empty. The Copenhagen-born artist had a baby and turned her attention to visual art in the years since her last release, which is a more ordinary explanation for a long silence than the music industry usually offers and a more convincing one.
The arithmetic in the coverage does not quite work, and it is worth naming. The Line of Best Fit frames the return as six years away while also placing her last studio album, Lovers That Come and Go, in 2018, which is eight years back from this release. The piece does not say what the six-year count runs from, so either something came out between the album and now, or the figure is loose. Her history goes back further than that album. She debuted in 2014 with the Lost In The Girl EP, which makes this the second half of a career with a long pause in the middle rather than a comeback from nowhere.
One credit in her catalogue stands out. She worked with Angelo Badalamenti on the soundtrack for Guldkysten, a Danish film released in 2015, which is an unusual line on the CV of an artist better known for dark pop singles and says something about the range she was working in before the break.
Nothing else has been attached to the release. No album has been announced, no further release dates have been given, and no live plans appear in the report, so for now this is one song and an open question about what follows it.
