Lachlan Caskey, guitarist for Australian indie rock band Last Dinosaurs, premiered a new single from his solo project Notes From Under Ground, "Solid Relations," through Under the Radar on August 10. Caskey named the project after Fyodor Dostoevsky's novella Notes from Underground, and the new track leans into late 1970s soft rock, drenched in ringing keys and falsetto backing vocals that recall Supertramp, complete with a key change for a final lift near the end.
The song takes an unflinching look at Caskey's own romantic failures, pairing warm, easygoing bass grooves with lyrics about wanting to change and be better despite past mistakes. Caskey described it as "an honest account of the sentiment of goodwill in lieu of pure romance," a love song that is not romantic so much as a sober reckoning with an uninspiring stretch of his own life.
"Solid Relations" is the second single from Caskey's upcoming EP, Deep State Nepo Baby, following lead single "Names In Blue" last month. The EP is out September 4 via Eryngii, and follows his 2019 debut album as Notes From Under Ground, Partner, along with a run of EPs since, most recently last year's American Grace & Guilt.
The new single joins the rest of the week's indie releases on the release calendar, giving Caskey's solo work another entry alongside his ongoing role in Last Dinosaurs.
