Open Mike Eagle and producer Kenny Segal have finally released the full-length project they had been promising each other for years: DOOMED!, out now on Backwoodz Studioz. Segal had reportedly been holding beats back specifically for this collaboration rather than handing them off piecemeal, and Clash loosely tagged the result "the world's first half-whimsical break-up album."
"Kenny made it very clear that he wasn't trying to keep having one or two beats on my projects; he wanted to build something," the rapper explained. He used a couple of Segal's beats on his own solo record Neighborhood Gods Unlimited on the condition they would focus on a full project together next, and that plan came together just as his own relationship was falling apart, giving him plenty to write about.
The album features guest appearances from billy woods, who also puts the record out through his own Backwoodz Studioz label, along with Gothic Tropic and others. Clash described Open Mike Eagle as working right in the pocket of Segal's production, calling it some of the producer's best work to date.
DOOMED! lands as the latest entry in Open Mike Eagle's run of art-rap projects, and no touring dates behind the release have been announced yet. An earlier report on the same album is also on file, part of this week's new hip-hop releases on the release calendar.
