Papa Roach cancel their Louder Than Life festival set over Tobin Esperance's health

Papa Roach will not play Louder Than Life this weekend. The band announced on social media that bassist Tobin Esperance cannot perform "due to an unexpected emergency," citing careful consideration and advice from medical professionals, and that they are therefore off the Louisville festival bill.

Nothing further has been said about his condition, and the statement asked for privacy. "Right now, Tobin's health is our immediate concern," the band wrote, adding that they look forward to having him back onstage in November. Esperance is 46 and joined the band in 1996; he keeps almost no public social media presence outside the group's accounts. His brother Anthony Esperance tours with them as a guitarist.

The cancellation leaves a hole in the Saturday schedule. Papa Roach were booked to close the Life Stage at 8:25pm, with Limp Bizkit headlining the opposite stage immediately afterwards. At the time Loudwire published, the festival had updated neither its website schedule nor its app, and no replacement was named. More than 200 bands are playing across the four days in Louisville; Iron Maiden headlined the Thursday opening, and Friday's music was briefly paused for severe weather before organisers adjusted set times without cutting anyone from the bill. The full daily running order went out earlier this month.

For the band the timing is awkward rather than ruinous. The Louisville set was their last US date of the year, which means the next time they are due on a stage is the opening night of the Rise Of The Roach European tour at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on 1 November. That run takes in Dublin, Birmingham, Manchester, London's O2 and Cardiff before mainland Europe, and finishes at the LDLC Arena in Lyon on 6 December. They are donating one pound per ticket on it to the mental health charity CALM, which they also supported with a 20,000-pound cheque on last year's UK dates.

Health withdrawals have run through the rock and metal touring year, from ZZ Top cancelling a Hollywood Bowl show over Frank Beard's health onwards, and Loudwire keeps a running list of the 2026 cancellations. What separates this one is how little is being said, which is what the band asked for. The dates that matter now are in the tour guide, and they start in Glasgow.
