Park Stickney and Matthias Bublath, a harp and piano duo, gave a live-streamed debut concert at Munich's Jazzclub Unterfahrt on August 12, UK Jazz News reported on August 14. Stickney is a harpist originally from New York who now lives in Switzerland, and Bublath is a pianist and organist from Munich.
The two met in Havana about a year and a half ago, when Stickney had arrived early for a festival performance and ran into Bublath, also on the bill, through a mutual friend. They headed to a jam session on the outskirts of the city that turned into what Stickney has called a very long evening, and stayed in touch afterward.
The Munich date came together when Bublath was given the chance to organize a series of concerts with changing lineups as part of the Summer Jazz Weeks at Unterfahrt, after an earlier try-out show in Switzerland. UK Jazz News described the two blending Latin, Cuban and Brazilian influences with jazz standards, blues and classical elements.
Stickney has described the creative chemistry directly: "What Matthias writes is quite complicated stuff." But, he added, "it gives me so much freedom that it's a real pleasure to play with him."
The performance landed on the evening of a solar eclipse, and UK Jazz News reported the duo intend to keep building on the partnership after this first outing.
