Perennial close out the album Modernism with the single "Emma Peel"

Perennial have shared "Emma Peel," and it is not a middle-of-the-record cut: the song is the finale of their album Modernism. Stereogum posted it on September 1 and described it as quick and sprightly, which is a fair account of a band that has spent this rollout in short, sharp bursts.

Releasing the closing track before the album is a choice worth noting. Most rollouts hold the last song back, on the theory that a listener should reach it in sequence. Putting it out as the fourth single says the trio would rather have four discrete songs working than protect a running order.

Those four are "What's New On The Beat Scene," the title track "Modernism," "Ready! Steady! Go!" and now "Emma Peel." Read together, the titles point at the same mid-1960s reference pool the band have been mining, right down to the name of the new one.

Perennial are a New England trio, and Modernism is described as arriving this month, with September already here. Stereogum framed the timing that way rather than naming a date, so the album is close without being pinned to a day.
