Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio made a surprise appearance with Hank Heaven at the band's release show for their new EP, Welterweight, Saturday night at Church Street Boxing Gym in New York City. Anastasio joined the group for "Hank Heaven's 113th Wet Dream," a song from the new EP, sitting in on a stage set up inside the venue's actual boxing ring.
The in-the-round show doubled as a release party for Welterweight, which Hank Heaven put out the same day. The band for the night included Palehound's El Kempner and Emeline O'Rourke on guitar, Ned Steves on bass and Zac Coe on drums, with the boxing gym's ring giving the crowd a rare 360-degree view of the set.
Anastasio was not the only guest of the night. Singer-songwriter Annie DiRusso joined Hank Heaven earlier in the set for "The Pope Is From Chicago," and cellist and vocalist book NOT brooke sat in for the same closing song that brought Anastasio into the ring.
The sit-in comes in the middle of a packed stretch for Anastasio. Phish are booked for three nights at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado, September 4 through 6, and Anastasio is set to appear at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Austin, Texas on September 26 alongside Eric Clapton and Joe Bonamassa. For Hank Heaven, the Church Street Boxing Gym show marked the public unveiling of Welterweight, another entry in a strong year for New York's rock and jam scene.
