Protomartyr share Feed the Sewer, a second single from Hotel Usona

Protomartyr have released "Feed the Sewer", the second song from Hotel Usona, and announced a run of events in the weeks before the album lands.

The Detroit band recorded the record with Dave Fridmann, and it is out on September 25 through Domino. "Feed the Sewer" follows the lead single "Sounds We Cannot Hear", which dealt with the paralysis of modern life.

Vocalist Joe Casey has been direct about what the new one is doing. The title comes from a line of dialogue in a Peter Greenaway film, and the sentiment, he said, is that artificial intelligence is against humanity, built on a belief that people are often willing to destroy the world in exchange for convenience. He described the lyrics as the usual mish-mash of political fears, personal grievances, literary references and poop jokes.

He was equally plain about the sound. The music is very loud, he said, like a data center. Stereogum's Tom Breihan called it a supremely ugly skronk-rock freakout that manages to be oppressive and cathartic at once.

Three events run before release. A playback and Q&A takes place in Paris on September 22, followed by a Q&A and cinema takeover at The Nickel Cinema in London on September 24, and a playback, Q&A, DJ set and signing in Berlin on September 25.

Fridmann's involvement is worth noting for a band who have mostly recorded closer to home. Two singles in, the record sounds heavier and more processed than its predecessors, which is roughly what a producer with his history tends to bring. The rock and indie album is on the release calendar for September.
