The Who's Roger Daltrey opened his A Great Night Out tour with a stop in Mesa

Roger Daltrey launched his A Great Night Out tour on Sunday with a show at Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona. The 82-year-old rock singer delivered a 19-song set mixing Who classics with solo material and an eclectic run of covers, backed by the same nine-piece band that supported him on his 2024 tour.

The band included Simon Townshend on guitar, Billy Nicholls on mandolin, Jody Linscott on percussion, John Hogg on bass, Katie Jacoby on violin, Steve Weston on harmonica, Geraint Watkins on keyboards and accordion, and Scott Devours on drums. Opening night featured support from Dan Bern.

Daltrey opened the roughly two-hour show with Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door" before moving through Who staples including "Who Are You," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Squeeze Box" and "Baba O'Riley." He also worked in reimagined covers of songs by Leo Sayer, Paul Simon, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Neil Young, whose "Rockin' in the Free World" got its live debut in Daltrey's catalog and closed out the main set.

The performance included a poignant tribute: Daltrey led the crowd in "Happy Birthday" for his late Who bandmate Keith Moon, who was born on Aug. 23, 1946, exactly 80 years before Daltrey's tour opener. Moon played drums for The Who from 1964 until his death in 1978 and appeared on every Who album through Who Are You. Daltrey closed the night with an acoustic solo rendition of the Kinks' "Days."

The tour continues through September and is tracked in full on the tour guide, with a rare Daltrey solo performance booked at New York's Town Hall on Sept. 27 before the run wraps Sept. 29 at the Chevalier Theatre in Medford, Massachusetts.
