Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters joins the documentary Freedom Theatre

Roger Waters has attached his name to a documentary about Palestinian resistance. The Pink Floyd co-founder has signed on as executive producer of Freedom Theatre, directed by Rishi Pelham.

The film follows Ahmed Tobasi, a resistance fighter turned artist, as he fights to keep a theatre running inside the Jenin refugee camp. Variety reports it took five years to shoot and is heading to the Venice film festival this month in search of distribution partners.

"I didn't intentionally set out to make this film. I kept returning to Jenin," Pelham told the outlet, describing a story that insisted on being told and a tension between two spaces: the sealed, controllable rehearsal room and the camp outside it, which is neither.

Waters is not an incidental name on the credits. He has supported Palestinian causes for years, urging followers in 2024 not to vote for Kamala Harris or Donald Trump over their positions on the conflict, and voicing support last July for Palestine Action after the organisation was proscribed under the Terrorism Act 2000.

He has also taken the argument to other musicians, telling Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood there was no argument to be made and calling it a genocide rather than a conflict, and answering Nick Cave, who in 2024 described his support for BDS as embarrassing and damaging.

Last month he shared a reimagined version of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" recorded with the Palestinian singer Mona Miari. Musicians taking public positions on the conflict has become its own recurring story, as when Singapore barred two Massive Attack members over a concert display.
