Sam Burton has released "Fairweather Friend", the title track of the third solo album he has due in October. Captured Tracks puts the record out on 30 October, and the song arrives with a video of Burton performing it.
The track follows "I'm A Stranger", the album's earlier preview. It works two feelings against each other: the comfort of the people closest to you, and the plain fact that not everything is built to last. The arrangement stays in the warm, unhurried register Burton has favoured across his run of records.
What makes it a marker for him is who played on it. "Fairweather Friend" is the first song Burton recorded with the band he had been touring with for several years, and the first he produced himself. "It's the first song I've put on a record that I produced myself with the band," he said, adding that it mattered to him to get them onto the album.
Burton also tied the session to something the group went through together, saying that after they survived the accident they all grew close, and that he wanted them on this record because of it. He has not said more about the incident.
The album is the third of his career and follows his move to Captured Tracks, a label deal announced earlier this year. Both the single and the album sit in the indie bracket his earlier work has occupied, and the release date is tracked on the release calendar.
