Scrybe pushes artists to look past stream counts

Scrybe launched Version 3 of its app on iOS and Android on August 14, AllHipHop reported. The platform is pushing back on the standard advice independent artists have followed for years, get more streams, more playlist placements, more monthly listeners, more followers, arguing that chasing those numbers has confused streams with people.

Founder and CEO Christian Phyfier said the update is built around treating streams as people rather than numbers: "Streams don't build careers by themselves. People do." The platform's core difference from conventional streaming services is a direct-to-creator subscription model called Scryber, with subscriptions starting at $0.50 a month and creators keeping 80% of subscription revenue.

Version 3 adds Tips and Fanmail, letting fans pay creators directly and message them through the app, on top of the existing subscription tier. DMO holds the platform's all-time record for most Scrybers by an independent artist, while Just The Empress has climbed to the No. 2 spot in active Scrybers, behind only Ye, who is also on the platform.

Scrybe formally recognized 50 early adopters as its "Founding Fifty," a group that includes Arizona-based artists Fe'La Iniko, Vavrix Owens and YungFace alongside Ye, DMO and Just The Empress. Scrybe is a small hip-hop-rooted platform competing against much larger streaming services with far bigger user bases, and the company frames the wider rollout as an open test of whether independent artists can convert casual listeners into paying subscribers.
