Sean Combs has filed a countersuit against producer Rodney Jones Jr., known as Lil Rod, in a complaint dated August 11 and obtained by Pitchfork. Combs accuses Jones of stealing his private footage and selling it to Netflix, and of making defamatory statements about him in the documentary series Sean Combs: The Reckoning, which 50 Cent produced. Combs is seeking undisclosed damages and wants Jones to return the footage and destroy any copies he still holds.
Jones's own suit, filed in 2024, accused Combs of sexual assault, grooming and abuse during the period the two worked together, from 2022 through 2023, when Jones contributed production to Combs's The Love Album: Off the Grid. Jones alleged Combs groped him without consent, forced him into sex acts with prostitutes and pressured him toward sex with another man, and claimed Combs never paid him the fee they had agreed on. That suit named Universal Music Group and several of its executives and sought $30 million in damages.
Jones expanded on some of those allegations in the documentary itself, making statements Combs's new countersuit says are defamatory. Combs has denied all of Jones's allegations through his lawyers, and does so again in the new filing, saying Jones is engaged in a "campaign for revenge and to profit from Mr. Combs," in part because Combs refused to pay Jones more than the fee they had agreed on.
The countersuit lands while Combs is serving a federal sentence of more than four years on charges of transporting people to engage in prostitution. He was recently let out of solitary confinement at Fort Dix, where he had been held after a fight with another inmate, so the Jones dispute is only one front in a run of hip-hop legal and prison news around him this month.
The Reckoning went on to earn an Emmy nomination, and Combs's complaint says he is separately working on his own documentary about what it calls his extraordinary and historic achievements. Pitchfork asked representatives for both men for comment; neither had responded as of publication.
