Sean Ragon, founding frontman of the band Cult Of Youth, has died at 45

Sean Ragon, the founder and frontman of Cult Of Youth, has died at 45. The band announced it on Facebook: "It is with a heavy heart that I say, Sean Ragon has left this mortal coil." No cause of death has been given.

Ragon was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and started out in local punk bands including Class Action and Wreckage in the late 1990s. He later told The Agit Reader that his own group was "definitely in the spirit of the first wave of punk" as well as the first wave of post-punk, which is a fair description of a band that never sat cleanly in any of the boxes it got filed under.

Cult Of Youth began roughly a decade after those first bands, as Ragon's solo project. Around the same time he opened the Brooklyn record store Heaven Street Records, which was renamed Material World Records in 2016 and became Nexus Records in 2025. The music drew on pagan folk, goth and punk, and on industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle.

By 2011 it was a full band, signed to Sacred Bones Records for a self-titled debut. Two more records for the label followed, 2012's Love Will Prevail and 2014's Final Days, both well received, as the sound widened toward something closer to psych rock. The group added a fifth member at one point.

Activity slowed in the second half of the 2010s and Ragon spent that stretch on side projects, including a run as a touring member of Psychic TV in 2016. The band's final album, With Open Arms, arrived in 2022, assembled with his Psychic TV bandmate Jeffer Berner from sessions recorded in the mountains of Vermont in 2015.
