Serena Cherry, the former Svalbard vocalist, has announced a new solo album called Extinguish Thy Flame, released under her black metal project Noctule and inspired by the video game Elden Ring. NME reported the news on August 14; the album is due out September 25.
Cherry fronted the post-hardcore band Svalbard, formed in 2011, which released four albums before announcing their breakup last year. "The support we received over the years as a band is something that I will carry in my heart forever," Cherry said in a statement about the split. Separately, during the Covid-19 lockdown, she began writing black metal as Noctule, releasing her debut solo album Wretched Abyss, inspired by the game Skyrim.
Extinguish Thy Flame takes its cues directly from Elden Ring: lead single "Lord Of Blood" is written as a tribute to the boss character Mogh, and the new single "Goddess Of Rot" is about the character Malenia, who Cherry has called one of the game's bleakest figures, fighting to protect her brother Miquella while losing herself to the game's Scarlet Rot affliction. "I deeply connected with her tragic story," Cherry said of writing the song.
Cherry said the pairing of subject and genre felt natural to her. "I think the unforgiving world of Elden Ring and the harsh sounds of extreme metal belong together," she said. "Metal is intense, relentless and uncompromising, so is Elden Ring." The album marks Cherry's second album as Noctule.
Extinguish Thy Flame is out September 25. It follows Cherry's first Noctule album, Wretched Abyss, inspired by Skyrim, and adds to this week's new metal announcements, tracked on the release calendar.
