Shining have released a new single, "North," along with a video the Norwegian band shot themselves in the Norwegian mountains. The band also wrote, recorded and mixed the song in their own studio, part of the hands-on approach that has defined their work and helped shape their sound.

"'North' is a salute to the ice-cold North, its darkness, its harsh winters and the defiance of the people shaped by them," founder Jorgen Munkeby says of the saxophone-heavy track. "At its core, it's a song about Northern perseverance and 'The Northern Way': that stubborn, self-reliant spirit that has driven Shining from the beginning." Metal Injection describes the group as pioneers of their own "blackjazz" genre, a term they took seriously enough to name their 2010 album Blackjazz after it.

The single arrives as Shining head into a busy stretch. They play Bloodstock Open Air in Derbyshire, UK on August 7, performing most of their fifth album, Blackjazz, before a run of European dates in November that opens in Copenhagen and continues through Utrecht and Paris. The tour then crosses to the UK for a three-date run with French avant-garde metal band Igorrr and IDM and breakcore artist Otto Von Schirach, hitting Birmingham, Glasgow and Dublin.

Fans can track the full run, including the Bloodstock date, on the festival tracker.

Shining are currently working on new music, though details of a future release haven't been shared. It's another release from one of metal's more restless outfits.
