Sijya has released a new single, Turbine, following her EP Leather & Brass from last year. The song was written around the same time as the EP, building on ideas she had been exploring in that period.
Sijya is a South Asian composer, producer and graphic artist. She put the decision to leave the song off the EP down to chance rather than any grand plan: "It's funny what we choose to put out and what we don't," she said. "It's a creative decision like any other but looking back it can feel quite random." She has joked that some of her best songs may still be sitting on her laptop.
She first played the song live at the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, after Thristian Richards of Global Roots found her music online and invited her to perform there. It was her first show outside India, and only her fifth or sixth show ever; she has said some of the track's sounds are what she imagines an old turbine sounding like, which is where its title comes from.
Turbine is out now via One Little Independent Records. No further release plans for Sijya were reported alongside the single.
