Silver Gore release the single Don't Tell Your Friends on Island Records

Silver Gore have released a new single, "Don't Tell Your Friends", out now on Island Records.

The duo is Ava Gore and Ethan P. Flynn, and the track follows "Peculiar" and "Black Cherry Liqueur" as part of a run that has moved them away from the sound of their debut EP, Dogs In Heaven, released last year. Clash described the new song as sonically raw but sugar-sweet melodically, which is a fair summary of a record that keeps both edges.

Ava Gore has explained what it is about in plain terms. This song is about having secrets, she said, and about being contradictory, because feeling one way and acting another is simply how people are. She went on to describe how friends form an idea of who you are, and how displaying yourself differently makes that hard for them, so you end up masking and changing your behaviour to fit their version of you.

Her conclusion is less resigned than the setup. We are all always shapeshifting, she said, adding that it can feel like everybody is pretending to be the same person they were last year, and that the real fun starts when you stop.

That tension between rawness and sweetness is what has made the duo hard to place. Clash calls them a renegade alt-pop act that refuses to settle in one spot, and the singles released this year have each pulled in a slightly different direction rather than converging on a house sound.

They are on the road behind it, touring with Yard Act this autumn. The single sits across rock, indie and pop, and is on the release calendar.
