Spanish Love Songs have announced a UK and European tour for February 2027, and buried in the announcement is a ticketing decision most bands at their level do not make.
Five per cent of tickets across the run are being held back as cost-of-living tickets, priced at 20 pounds in the UK and 20 euros in Europe, and sold with no questions asked. They are available only through the band's own presale, on an honours system, and fans have to be on the mailing list to get the password. There is no means test and no proof required, which is the whole design: the band are trusting people to take one only if they need it.
The rest of the run is the largest headline touring the Los Angeles punk band have done on this side of the Atlantic. It follows a North American run that largely sold out, and includes their first visit to Spain.
The UK leg opens at Southampton Engine Rooms on 11 February 2027 and finishes at the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London on 20 February. Michael Cera Palin, Carly Cosgrove and Bike Routes support the UK dates. The European leg takes in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, Bologna, Zurich, Munich, Karlsruhe, Nijmegen and Antwerp before the two Spanish shows: Sala Copernico in Madrid on 24 February and Sala Boveda in Barcelona on 25 February.
Band presale opens on Wednesday 23 September and general sale follows on Friday 25 September.
The tour trails Future Nausea, the band's fifth full-length, which arrives on 6 November through Pure Noise Records. A song from it, Good American, is already out.
The record was produced by Chris Walla, formerly of Death Cab for Cutie, and Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties. That is a pairing of two producers who came out of bands rather than out of studios, which fits a group whose songs have always been more interested in what people can and cannot afford than in how big the chorus is.
Spanish Love Songs have spent a decade writing about precarity, debt and the gap between how life was supposed to go and how it went. Reserving a slice of every room for people who cannot pay full price is the same argument carried out of the songs and into the box office, and it is measurable in a way a lyric is not.
