Spotify has built a support programme around one of its own playlists. Fresh Finds Forward will admit around 10,000 emerging independent artists a year, each getting a twelve-month package that runs from free studio days to six months of therapy, and the invitations reach back to the start of the year.
The eligibility rule is the unusual part. Any artist added to a Fresh Finds playlist from 1 January 2026 onward qualifies and will be notified through Spotify for Artists, with the twelve months counted from the point they are onboarded rather than from launch. Nobody has to apply.
The package is not identical everywhere. Free studio time is restricted to artists based in the United States, at rooms including Electric Lady Studios in New York, The Lighthouse at Ocean Way Nashville and Spotify Studios in Los Angeles, and the company has not said whether the other benefits reach every market. The rest covers premium access to LANDR Studio Pro and Splice's Creator plan, six months of free therapy through BetterHelp, early access to some Spotify tools, prioritised access to tour and video partnerships with the company, and a badge on the artist profile.
The maths leaves a gap Spotify has not explained. The company said in May 2025 that more than 18,000 artists from 127 countries appeared on Fresh Finds playlists in 2024 alone, well above the 10,000 a year it now expects to take in, and it has not said how it will narrow that field.
The case for the playlists is made with numbers. Spotify says more than 80,000 artists have reached new listeners through Fresh Finds over more than a decade, that the lists drove more than 128 million first-time artist discoveries since 2024, and that nearly 70% of Fresh Finds streams in 2024 were a listener hearing an artist for the first time. Alumni have been nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys for five years running.
More than one in ten artists earning over $100,000 a year on Spotify were first playlisted somewhere in the Fresh Finds system, according to the company's Loud & Clear report in March. That is more than 1,600 of the 13,800 artists who cleared six figures last year, before labels, distributors and publishers take their share.
Joe Hadley of Spotify framed the programme as the next step after a placement. He said the company spent years listening to what independent artists actually need and that Fresh Finds Forward builds a support system around the moment of discovery rather than leaving it at a playlist add.
The programme sits alongside Spotify's other moves to turn editorial brands into events and services, including a one-day R&B festival built around its RNB X playlist with Live Nation Urban. Our other coverage of how the platform treats indie catalogues includes its licensing of Merlin's labels for AI covers and its plan to flag AI artists and hold them back from recommendations.
