Starcleaner Reunion release new single Lay On Plastic Moment

New York quartet Starcleaner Reunion have released "Lay On Plastic Moment," the third single from their upcoming debut album Umbrella, following earlier singles "Never Odd Or Even" and "Weather Instrument," The Line of Best Fit reported on August 13. Singer Jo Roman wrote the lyrics about her return to New York in 2023, a city she once called home before her family had to move away, and the accompanying video was directed by Sian Lathrop and guitarist Patrick Drummond.

"Coming back to New York in 2023 was at first exciting, but finding my grounding here was something that proved to be difficult," Roman says. "I wanted to highlight glimpses of fluttering hope, finding regrowth in a small apartment, in my tiny room."

The song came together differently than most of the record. Where the band usually built songs out of parts they were already playing live, Drummond says "Lay On Plastic Moment" started as an old demo the group kept revisiting in the practice room until it finally clicked in the studio. Umbrella is the band's first record written as a full band of writers, following a run of touring with Friko, TOPS and five weeks supporting This Is Lorelei, whose members guitarist Neil Torman called "tour masters" who had been mentors on the road.

The band built out the album's sound partly with synths and amps bought on Facebook Marketplace while touring, including a Korg micro preset Roman co-owns with bandmate Adam Kenter and calls her favorite instrument she owns, describing its sound as "wonky, donky, and cute." Torman calls it the band's "signature keyboard."

Umbrella is due September 25 via Take Care Records, and the band's growing catalog sits within indie and in the release calendar on MusicSuey.
