Steve Earle and Los Lobos have released their first studio collaboration in decades-long careers, a new single called Volver A Celaya, out via New West Records. The two acts had shared festival stages and package tours for years but had never recorded together until this summer, when Earle joined Los Lobos in Richmond, Virginia, for a session at Red Amp Studios produced by Los Lobos saxophonist Steve Berlin.

Earle described the collaboration as decades overdue: "Los Lobos and I have been connected at our roots since the beginning of our careers," he said. "We've shared stages at festivals and toured together as a package but collaborating in the studio was a box unchecked, until now."

Earle first wrote Volver A Celaya during songwriting workshops he led last spring at Brooklyn's Jalopy Theatre and School of Music, before bringing it to Los Lobos for the recording session. The collaboration will also get a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl release on October 16, its B-side pairing the new song with Earle's City of Immigrants, originally on his Grammy-winning 2007 album Washington Square Serenade, which recently got a new Steve Buscemi-directed video.

Earle is midway through his Fifty-One Years of Songs and Stories tour, heading to Europe later this month with the Waterboys before a Hardly Strictly Bluegrass tribute set featuring Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings and Molly Tuttle. Los Lobos continues its own touring schedule, with the Brotherhood Tour alongside Los Lonely Boys, a stop at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion and the 2027 Latin Legends Cruise on the calendar.
