Sugar have a documentary out about their reunion, a 20 minute film called Changes: The Story of Sugar that launched on YouTube August 6, SPIN reported. It pairs newly filmed interviews with frontman Bob Mould, bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis with rare archival clips, including previously unseen footage of the band's first ever show at Athens, Georgia's 40 Watt Club.
The film traces Sugar's journey from its early 1990s formation through this spring's reunion tour, its first in more than 31 years, which included three nights at New York's Webster Hall. Guests on that run included Mould's longtime solo band collaborator Jason Narducy and Drive-By Truckers frontman Patterson Hood.
"I tend to be identified most with Husker Du and my solo albums, but few know how much fun I had with Sugar," Mould says in the film.
Travis, who is older than his bandmates, describes the reunion as a gift in the documentary, and Barbe's daughter Annabelle, who attended the Webster Hall shows, says she came away with a better understanding of the band's impact. The reunion has also produced three new studio recordings, most recently Keep Looping, which arrived in late June.
The tour that the documentary covers resumes August 11 in Denver and wraps October 24 in Athens, with a portion of every ticket benefiting the Trevor Project. The film lands in our rock coverage.
