Surge turns festival fans into a ticket sales team

Dancing Astronaut profiles the company as festivals deal with higher costs and harder ticket sales.

Surge, an ambassador driven ticket marketing platform, is turning festival fans into a sales force, Dancing Astronaut reported on August 6. The company, co-founded by 28 year old Alex Hilburn, activates a nationwide network of more than 10,000 ambassadors who sell tickets to festivals they already attend, rather than relying on paid ad campaigns.

The pitch lands at a rough moment for festivals: rising production costs, cancellations and shifting fan spending have made ticket sales harder across the industry, Dancing Astronaut reported. Surge's client list includes Ultra Europe, Kygo's Palm Tree Music Festival, Hotel EDC, Windy City Smokeout and Bert Kreischer's Full Throttle Festival.

The company generated more than $6 million in ticket sales in its first year, moving over 35,000 tickets, and has already topped $10 million in ambassador-led sales in 2026. Ambassadors often account for up to 30 percent of an event's total ticket sales, Dancing Astronaut reported, and the platform takes no fan data, unlike services that collect and monetize attendee information.

"With these programs, the mistake most brands make is over-engineering the system or turning it into a data grab," Hilburn said. Many of Surge's ambassadors are Gen Z fans drawn from a college network spanning more than 400 universities, and they get paid to promote events they were already talking about.

Hilburn's work with these ambassador programs predates Surge itself: across his career he has helped generate more than $20 million in festival ticket sales, and he has framed the company's approach as intentionally low-tech rather than data-driven. The story lands in our electronic coverage.
