Sway, one of the first British rappers to force the domestic industry to take UK hip-hop seriously, has died at 44. Clash reports the news from multiple sources, and no cause of death has been given. He had celebrated his birthday only a few weeks earlier.
Born Derek Andrew Safo, he came of age in Hornsey in north London and was drawn into the UK hip-hop scene as the 1990s turned into the 2000s, a period when the British version of the form had almost no commercial infrastructure behind it. What he did next is the line that gets repeated for a reason: he became the first rapper to win a MOBO Award without having released an album at all.
That was in 2005, and the category was Best Hip-Hop Act. The MOBO Awards, posting a tribute, spelled out who he beat to it: 50 Cent and The Game, both then at the peak of their commercial run. "Proud to have him as part of our history," the organisation wrote, sending its love to his family and fans.
His debut album arrived afterwards and arrived on his own terms. This Is My Demo was released independently, sold more than 50,000 copies and picked up a co-sign from Pharrell Williams, which is what carried his name beyond Britain. Selling that many records outside the major label system, in that genre, in that decade, was close to unheard of.
He kept working across all three sides of the job, as a rapper, a songwriter and a producer, and he ran the Dcypha imprint, which existed to give underground artists a platform rather than to break a star. That is the part of his career that rarely makes headlines and is the reason the tributes came from other rappers rather than from labels.
Lowkey put it in the terms the scene tends to use. "We stand on the shoulders of giants and Sway the pioneer is one of them," he wrote, which is a fair description of what a first MOBO win in 2005 unlocked for everybody who came after.
The scene he helped open now headlines the country's biggest festivals: Dave brought out James Blake, Central Cee and Kano at Reading this summer, and Skepta aired three new songs on the same bill. Neither of those slots existed as a possibility when Sway collected his award. More hip-hop coverage is on the hub.
