Sweet Pill has relocated its upcoming Houston show after learning the original venue, White Oak Music Hall, had booked a separate event for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on the same night. Paxton is currently running for U.S. Senate against Democratic state Representative James Talarico, and his event was scheduled to take place upstairs while emo-punk groups Meet Me @ The Altar and Leisure Hour played downstairs.
The bands were not told about the overlapping booking in advance and were, according to Texas Monthly, pretty unhappy to learn about it after the fact. Moving the show avoids the two events sharing a building on the same night, though Sweet Pill has not announced the new venue publicly as of this report.
The relocation is a small logistical headache but a pointed one for a scene that has been vocal about the current political climate in Texas. Independent, all-ages venues like White Oak Music Hall routinely double-book their spaces across genres and audiences to stay financially viable, which is how a punk bill and a political fundraiser ended up sharing a building in the first place.
