Tamina Khyrah-Joi debuts with new single "As Above So Below"

R&B singer Tamina Khyrah-Joi released her new single "As Above So Below" on August 11, premiered through SoulTracks' First Listen series. The song rides a funk groove under jazz-inflected lead and harmony vocals, built around a message about faith outlasting doubt. Over horns from trumpeter Willie Bradley and trombonist Myrish, Khyrah-Joi sings a chorus aimed at digital-age doubt: "Don't get caught up in all the superficial propaganda, the truth is they don't want you to remember what you're made of."

Her mother, pianist Dr. Gail Jhonson, plays on the track as well, adding what SoulTracks described as snappy piano runs under the horns. Producer Burnie Stevenson, who also worked on the pair's 2025 holiday single "Christmas Candlelight," is back behind the board for the new song.

Khyrah-Joi is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, the same school her mother once attended. About 15 years ago, long before she had a solo catalog of her own, she sat down at a piano to perform Jill Scott's crossover hit "The Way," an early sign of the soulful, jazz-leaning style she has kept since. She has also sung backup for veteran R&B artists Phil Perry and Norman Brown.

Jhonson leads Jazz in Pink, an all-female contemporary jazz ensemble that counts Khyrah-Joi as a vocalist; the two appeared together in SoulTracks' pages last December with "Christmas Candlelight." "As Above So Below" follows Khyrah-Joi's 2026 wedding anthem "Love You For Always," marking a turn from romance toward spiritual reassurance, and closes on a line aimed straight at the listener: "I'm here to remind you you're a star."

The single lands in R&B and soul, the lane SoulTracks has followed Khyrah-Joi in since her earliest features, and sits alongside the rest of August's new output in the release calendar.
