The Body and Cel Genesis announce debut collaborative album

The Body and Cel Genesis have announced their debut collaborative album, Whole Wide World, due November 13 through Thrill Jockey. Lead single "Candy Crush," previously available only on Bandcamp, is now out on all platforms.

The pairing of Portland's The Body and Oakland's Cel Genesis grew out of an idea the two acts hatched while on tour together, with the collaboration built on little more than friendship and a shared trust in each other's process. Cel Genesis' Chris Danko described the album's rhythmic backbone as "two drummers locking in together," and recalled one session where the band kept playing after a song had technically ended simply because it was fun.

The eight-track record moves between trance, distortion and experimental electronica, built from beds of electronics generated by Cel Genesis alongside live drumming from Lee Buford and Nick Cowman, later reworked and rearranged. It was recorded at Machines with Magnets in Rhode Island by Seth Manchester, known for his work with Model/Actriz, with additional recording done in California by Andrew Oswald. The album took shape over roughly two years across multiple sessions.

The tracklist runs "Ghost," "Whole Wide World," "Negative Sum," "Memories," "To Be Eviscerated," "Candy Crush," "Remind Me" and "Everything," moving from the record's most abrasive material toward its quieter closing stretch.

Whole Wide World arrives November 13, giving fans of both metal acts a full-length collaboration to look forward to alongside a run of fall Thrill Jockey releases tracked on the release calendar.
