The Kinsman Dazz Band have a new video out for Look At What You've Done, and SoulTracks has made it the site's video of the month for September. The band, led by founding member Michael J. Calhoun, brought in Cleveland singer Eddie B. Sands Jr. to front the song, a straight soul love ballad of the kind that has been in short supply lately.
The pairing is the point of the record. Sands has a gravelly, expressive voice that SoulTracks compared to Marvin Junior of The Dells, and it sits against an arrangement that stays smooth throughout, so the roughness in the vocal is the only thing pulling. Chris Rizik wrote that the song could have been a hit at any point in the past 50 years but sounds particularly rich in 2026.
Calhoun wrote it and co-produced with Pete Tokar, who also engineered, mixed and mastered the record. The rhythm arrangement is credited to Calhoun, Tokar and Byron Clayton, with Sands, Jayshawn Champion and Wayne Preston handling the background vocal arrangement. Tokar, Calhoun, John McLaughlin and Clayton played on it.
Clayton also directed the video, with Calhoun producing and Lamont Patterson and Calhoun credited as executive producers for Worldmovement Enterprises. Jayshawn Champion recorded the lead vocal and J STAXXXz the backgrounds. That is a lot of credits for a single, and it reflects a group that operates as a working studio band rather than a legacy act on a nostalgia circuit.
The Kinsman Dazz Band carries a Cleveland lineage that runs back to the Kinsman Dazz of the 1970s and the Dazz Band that grew out of it. The city recently named a street after the Dazz Band, which is the level of recognition that usually arrives long after a group has stopped releasing anything.
This one has not. Calhoun's band has kept a steady run of singles going, moving between funk workouts and slower ballads, and the SoulTracks pick is a recognition of the volume as much as this particular song.
Look At What You've Done is available to buy through Worldmovement, and the video is out now. The rest of the month's rnb-soul releases, including Heidi Tann's Coffee, are listed on the release calendar.
