Nina Winder-Lind, the Brighton-based, Swedish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for her work with the band The New Eves, shared a new solo track called "Foremothers" on August 13, premiering with Under the Radar ahead of her debut solo album, Wild Love, out the next day via Transgressive. She previously released a solo EP, The Spirit Is Carnal, in 2023, and drew acclaim last year for The New Eves' debut, The New Eve is Rising, a howling, eclectic take on folk, art rock and post-punk.
"Foremothers" is built as a tribute to the women in Winder-Lind's family line, opening with sparse guitar and a chanted line: "I sing for you, for you my grandmother, and your mother, and her mother." The refrain repeats and builds across the song as the full band joins in, with Winder-Lind's vocals growing more impassioned each time, transfiguring the track from a folk meditation into what Under the Radar called a churning rock whirlwind soaked in distortion, closing with the line "don't ever think I have forgotten you."
"To play 'Foremothers' is like performing a ritual or something," Winder-Lind said of the track. "It's an offering and a release, and it takes my breath away every time." She said the band recorded it live in a single take, adding, "we didn't need to add anything. The song knows what it is."
Winder-Lind described Wild Love's songs as broadly about love in different forms, saying the album's baseline is simply being alive: "you get to do all these things and feel all these things, and you're in a body, and you get to express yourself." She called the record's songs love songs in the widest sense, romantic, familial and tied to the landscapes around her, shifting the primordial themes of her band's work inward toward her own life.
Wild Love, out August 14 and now on the release calendar, follows earlier singles "This Is Our Life," "Girls" and "Headfirst," and arrives as Winder-Lind continues to balance her solo career alongside her ongoing work with The New Eves.
