The Sewing Club share the single Bark before their debut album Sew

The Sewing Club have released Bark, another preview of their first album, and the band gave a one-line account of what it is about. "The whole premise of the song is discovering someone isn't who they say they are," they said. The Nashville band's debut, Sew, arrives on 2 October through Born Losers Records.

The record was made with Calvin Lauber, a longtime collaborator, and the reference points the band name are older than they are: Veruca Salt and The Breeders, alongside contemporaries Wishy and Slow Pulp. That last connection is direct, since Henry Stoehr of Slow Pulp co-produced their 2024 EP Care.

What the album is about is a specific stretch of life rather than a theme. "We're chasing the feeling of being twenty-something and watching our lives quietly rearrange themselves," the band said, describing friendships drifting, relationships ending, and people you expected to know forever turning into strangers while everything moves faster than you can track.

That is well-worn territory for a first album, and the songs live or die on the specificity rather than the subject. Bark works because it stays on one situation, a person turning out to be somebody else, rather than reaching for a general statement about growing up.

The touring is where the year gets busy. A UK run opens on 15 October at The Shacklewell Arms in London before Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Brighton, and the band play Left of the Dial in Rotterdam on 23 and 24 October.

Further European and US dates follow with Chase Petra and Kurt Travis, which puts them in front of an audience already primed for this kind of writing rather than making them build one from nothing.

Sew is out on 2 October. It joins the autumn's other indie and rock debuts on the release calendar, and the UK dates are listed in the tour guide.
