The Strokes deny hiring the influencer campaign behind their Fantano diss song

A PR firm offered a creator $500 for a video about the line, on condition it carried zero bias toward the critic and nothing bad about the band.

The Strokes Julian Casablancas Anthony Fantano

Anthony Fantano posted a video on 11 August 2026 showing that a PR company had offered a music content creator $500 to make short-form video about a Strokes lyric that names him. A representative for the band has since told him they knew nothing about it.

The line sits on Lonely in the Future, from the Strokes album Reality Awaits. The offer came by email from a short-form promotional company called YTK Media, sent to an unnamed music commentator with, in Fantano's description, tens of thousands of followers. The pitch was for the album, and specifically for the diss.

Fantano's objection was partly to the sum. Somebody was trying to astroturf public sentiment against him for under a grand, he said, and $500 does read as a lowball. When the creator followed up, YTK Media confirmed the video would need to carry zero bias toward Fantano and nothing bad said about the band.

The statement Fantano received afterwards, from a representative for the group, said that the band and their label did not know this was happening and did not hire YTK Media. That left him asking the obvious question: whether the firm was representing the Strokes' interests unprompted, or whether some third party had placed the request.

The episode sits inside a pattern Fantano has been documenting. Artists, labels and publicity teams increasingly pay influencers to make content promoting music without disclosing that it is paid, and the appeal of a paid creator over a critic is that a creator can be relied on to be positive.

His platform can absorb a campaign like this, which is more or less his point about everyone else's. A smaller commentator on the receiving end of an undisclosed paid push has far less room, though as Exclaim! noted, a smaller commentator is also less likely to end up named in a Strokes song in the first place.

We covered the release of Reality Awaits, the band's first album in six years, and Fantano's reviews have made news before, including his one out of ten verdict on a Lil Uzi Vert EP. More is on our indie hub.
