Jack White's Third Man Records has announced a run of pop-up stores across the UK and Ireland, NME reported on August 5. The label will take over five independent record shops between August 28 and September 20, in Bristol, Newcastle, Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow.
Each pop-up will stock exclusive vinyl, limited-edition merchandise, posters and books, along with a series of hand-screen-printed "bootleg" editions of White's own records, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Third Man has framed the bootlegs as coming from the mysterious "Frozen Charlatan" character on the cover of White's new album, Frozen Charlotte, said in the label's own account to have stolen a cache of the musician's records to hand out at the pop-up events.
Other than the Glasgow stop, each pop-up coincides with a date on White's UK and Ireland tour in support of Frozen Charlotte, which opens with two nights at London's Eventim Apollo on August 25 and 26 before shows in Bristol, Newcastle and Belfast and two nights at Dublin's 3Olympia Theatre; White then heads to North America for shows in September, October and November, where Twin Temple will open.
Frozen Charlotte is White's seventh solo record. In a three-and-a-half-star review, NME called it a record that "may not rank among his classic work but it's good fun," adding that "it's gonna really be something live." White founded Third Man Records in Detroit in 2001; the label now also has locations in Nashville and London and has previously run pop-up events in Paris, Liverpool and Brighton and at festivals worldwide.
White has kept up a busy run of guest appearances around the new album's rollout: he recently brought out the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson in Chicago for a cover of Free's 1969 song "I'm a Mover," and was joined by his daughter Scarlett in Brooklyn for three White Stripes songs, another callback to his rock roots.
