Told Slant released a new song called Sailor on Aug. 31, days before the album it comes from. What's Up arrives on Friday, which puts Sailor in the last slot before a record most of its audience will hear in full within the week.
It is the third preview from the album. Manhattan and Draw Blood came first, and Stereogum, which posted the song, called both of them memorable and moving before singling out Sailor as the one that lands hardest. Danielle Chelosky, who wrote the piece, described it plainly as a tearjerker.
Chelosky also warned against reading the album title too literally, saying there is nothing casual about the songs on What's Up despite the shrug the phrase implies. That gap between an offhand title and heavy material is the frame Stereogum set for the record on the eve of release.
Told Slant sit firmly in the indie end of the release schedule, where a three-single rollout in the fortnight before an album is the standard shape. What's Up and the rest of the week's arrivals are listed on the release calendar.
